The Ultimate Guide to Cap & Gown Photos at High Point University

Graduation is such a huge milestone and your photos should feel just as special as the moment itself. If you’re searching for “HPU cap and gown photos” or planning your High Point University graduation pictures, you’re in the right place.

As a local HPU senior photographer, I’ve photographed so many seniors on this campus, and I can confidently say: there is nothing like High Point University in the spring. The energy, the excitement, the pride; it all comes together in the most beautiful way.

Let’s walk through everything you need to know to make your cap & gown session effortless, fun, and unforgettable.

The Best Photo Locations at High Point University

One of the reasons I love shooting High Point University graduation pictures is the variety of stunning backdrops all in one place. The ENTIRE campus is a photo opt!

Here are a few of our most photographed spots on campus:

The Fountain (Quebin Area)
This is a classic. It’s elegant, iconic, and gives you that dreamy, celebratory feel.

Roberts Hall
Grand, timeless, and instantly recognizable—this is a must for that signature HPU look.

The Panther Statue
A symbol of HPU pride! This is always a favorite for seniors who want that “I did it” moment captured.

The “I ❤️ HPU” Sign
Fun, bold, and full of personality—perfect for showing your school spirit.

Hidden Garden + Walkway Spots
Some of the best images actually come from the quieter corners; beautiful light, greenery, and space to relax into natural moments.

What to Wear Under Your Cap & Gown

This is one of the most common questions I get and it matters more than you think!

For girls:

  • A solid-colored dress (white, black, pastels photograph beautifully)

  • Something lightweight (gowns can get warm!)

  • Heels, wedges, or dressy sandals (bring comfortable shoes for walking and then slide on the heels when we get there!)

For guys:

  • Dress shirt + tie or open collar

  • Dress pants or khakis

  • Clean, classic shoes

My professional recommedation:
Wear something you love without the gown too because we will always do a few portraits without it for variety! …and it’s a great recent headshot as you enter the career force!

When to Take Your Photos (Timing is Everything)

If you want your HPU cap and gown photos to look next-level, timing is key.

Best time of day:
My favorite times to shoot are early morning or late afternoon towards sunset! With that said, I have photographed seniors all throughout the day and it works on HPU’s campus! Because the campus is so photogenic, there are always places on campus that are 1.) beautiful and 2.) have nice lighting!

Best time of year:
👉 2–4 weeks before graduation

Why?

  • Campus is still beautiful and lively

  • You’re not rushed or stressed

  • You’ll have your photos ready to share for graduation

What to Bring to Your Session

Bringing a few extras can take your session from great to amazing.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Your cap + gown (steamed and ready!)

  • Heels or a second pair of shoes

  • Champagne (or a fun non-alcoholic option!) 🥂

  • Confetti or poppers

  • Cords, stoles, medals

  • Your phone for music (yes, it helps loosen everyone up!)

Cap & Tassel Tips (Don’t Skip This!)

This is the part most people don’t think about but it makes a BIG difference in your final images.

✔ Tassel placement:
Traditionally worn on the right side before graduation

✔ How to wear your cap:

  • It should sit flat on your head (not tilted back) …own the cap!

  • About 1–2 inches above your eyebrows

✔ Bobby pins are your best friend:
Especially if it’s windy (and it often is!)

✔ Practice the toss:
We’ll absolutely do a cap toss but it usually takes a few tries to get it just right!
